120Hz Monitors

Gigabyte Aorus 48

Take your competitive gaming experience to the next level with a 120Hz monitor. A monitor’s refresh rate is measured in Hertz (Hz) and indicates how many times the monitor can refresh every pixel per second. High refresh rate monitors help to reduce screen tearing, motion blur, and even monitor stutter. What's more, as the display is refreshing at a faster rate, a higher Hz can even help provide a competitive edge in AAA and esports titles such as Valorant, Counter-Stike 2, and the latest Call of Duty.

What does 120Hz mean?

120Hz means the gaming monitor refreshes the screen 120 times a second. Traditional office and budget gaming monitors often have refresh rates of 60 or 75Hz. With the screen able to redraw every pixel 120 times per second, you benefit from notably smoother gameplay with less motion blur. To take full advantage of a higher refresh rate monitor, you'll need a gaming PC and graphics card that can produce high enough FPS to match or surpass the refresh rate you want.

120Hz Across Resolutions

120Hz monitors are available across a range of resolutions from 1080p up to 8K, with each resolution providing their own set of benefits.

  • 120Hz 1080p monitors offer exceptional value, whilst delivering phenomenal performance by reducing screen tearing and motion blur.
  • 120Hz 1440p monitors deliver sharper visuals, with silky smooth frame rates, perfect for gamers, streamers, and content creators.
  • 120Hz 4K monitors benefit from an increased screen real estate allowing for multiple windows to be open at once, making multitasking a breeze making them an excellent choice for professionals. Additionally, gamers will love the reduced input lag, perfect for competitive online gaming.
  • 120Hz 8K monitors deliver the cutting edge of display technology, delivering incredible detail that loses no definition, even during the most chaotic battles.

As you move up from 1080p to 8K, the demands of each display increases. You can enjoy fantastic gaming performance at 1080p 120Hz using an APU in competitive games, such as CS2 and Valorant. However, for the best results at 8K 120Hz, you will require a top tier dedicated GPU, like an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090.

Benefits of a 120Hz monitor

  • Better Motion Resolution: One of the main advantages of a higher refresh rate is improved motion resolution. Put simply, this is the perceived crispness of a moving image. When the brain blends frames to create a moving image, the finer details are often lost, reducing the quality. 120Hz gaming monitors help to combat motion blur by providing more information to our brains. Thanks to the increased number of frames, your brain has more information to work with, leading to motion being perceived as fluid, as well as more details being visible.
  • Less Screen Tearing: This comes down to the difference between refresh rate and the frame rate. The frame rate is dictated by the system's graphics card. When this exceeds the monitor's refresh rate, screen tearing can occur. This is when half frames appear on the same screen momentarily. Even though they last less than a second, it is a huge distraction, especially for gamers.
  • Increased Responsiveness: The refresh rate of a monitor also affects the input lag. Input lag is the delay between the monitor receiving a signal and it being displayed on the screen. For example, the input of a 60Hz monitor will never go below 16.67ms, since that's the amount of time it takes to pass from one refresh to the next. In contrast, a 120Hz monitor will cut that time to 8.33ms. While this might not seem significant, it is an important consideration for gaming enthusiasts who want the graphics to run as smoothly as possible.
